Rest in Peace, Billy Graham?

Rest in peace, Billy? I remember this very clearly. I was in the thick of politics as a political journalist when this happened and this is why I hated it.

It turns good people into pragmatic people who choose political efficiency over the truth of the gospel! Neither the Republican Party nor Democratic Party is for Christians. Never forget!

Christians still choose one party over the other to this day. Exhibit A: Our Current President.

First Mormonism is no longer a cult. Then grabbing women by the crotch is okay. And then never-ending bombing of Africa and the Middle East and war preparations for Venezuela. But as long as they’re Republican and Pro-Life we’re supposed to be okay. It’s all evil. The Republican Party is not the Christian Party.

There is no home for Christians in U.S. politics where Christians are used to advance the Empire of the United States over and above the Kingdom of God. Period.

Jesus’s Kingdom vision looks very different from the pictures that Democrats and Republicans and the compromised U.S. Evangelicals paint for us, and we should be thankful.

See Scot McKnight’s book on “The Sermon on the Mount.”

And for those who say this is a minor thing among the countless amount of good that he has done do themselves nor the gospel any justice. I recently read a book diving into the theological pragmatism that shaped the theology of the 50s and I’m not a fan. I told y’all I don’t like political pragmatism and I don’t like theological pragmatism.

And by writing, “Rest In Peace, Billy?” I am not judging where he will spend eternity. I have no authority (Matthew 7:1). And lest I be judged, I have some non-political compromises I have made that surely setback the gospel. But my transgressions will come out in due time. I will expose myself to the light.
